Hip-Hop Dance
Classes will be fun and challenging and will introduce students campers to various dance styles such as B-Boying/B-Girling (often misunderstood as breakdancing), hip hop, Poppin, Locking, jazz, African, and more. The instructors will define the basic movements and techniques, teach them to the students, and develop the movements into combinations for practice. Classes promote and develop strength, stamina, balance, and flexibility needed for these styles of dance. The camp will culminate with a performance of the campers with Illstyle & Peace closing the performance with their "HIGH ENERGY" lec dem show called "Become Your Dreams".
ABOUT THE COMPANY:
Philadelphia-based Illstyle & Peace Productions is a multicultural dance company whose work has been fusing the spirit of old-school hip-hop with various styles of African dance, ballet, jazz, and tap since 2002. Movement, Voice & Performance
We will start everyday with movement and voice exercises to get warmed up followed by theatre and improv games to practice skills and have fun!!. The bulk of the afternoon will involve putting a performance together. This may be based on folk tales from other cultures or it may be something we create together as a collective. The goal is to create a performance to share with the public at the end of our time together. The performance will be created by the participants and they will be responsible for costumes, set, music, and stage management.
ABOUT JASON PHELPS:
Jason Phelps is a multi-disciplinary artist whose work has been performed all over the country. Currently, he calls Austin home. He has been awarded the Best Actor Award from the Austin Critic's Table five times and was a founding member of FRONTERA/Hyde Park Theatre and MS/Nerve Dance Co. He is also a trained Waldorf class teacher and has led theatre trainings for young people for the past 7 years. Currently he teaches at the Austin Discovery School and is performing in The Intergalactic Nemesis as well as developing a new dance/theatre work.
